Friendship

Well, an inventory of Big Words has to mention Friendship, doesn’t it?  It’s a word that gets richer for me.I’m grateful for wonderful friends.

Father

Father was one of the first Big Words I took on and I’ve been at it for almost two years on and off. It’s a big big word and it’s been a valuable contemplation. If you remember the earlier post you’ll know this has changed quite a bit.

Inky Learning

All nighters weren’t just a college fad for me.  I learned to learn in the quiet of the night.   Lot’s of these concepts shift a bit as we grow older.  Nobody warned us…or did they?

Portland

When I fell from marriage, home,
bland feats of life-as-I’d-known-it,
coupled-into some twenty-plus years ago,
suddenly everything was a question again.
What is? What isn’t?

All my assumptions broke into pieces:
sharp; slithery; and none-too-shiny.
Portland spoke through my ticklish in-step.
She pressed into the soles of my feet with
rose-and-tumble acceptance,
as I skirted puddles known and unknown.
Restless possiblity swayed along my sides
while Portland steadied my stride—“It’s ok.”

Who knew that asphalt could be a tender touch,
that this patient, old-friend town of mine
would roll out padding and take me easy,
while the stuffing in my head blew ‘round
many cups of coffee: many thanks, Portland.

Subway

I love the subterranean world of the subway.

Musings on Freedom

My Father always presides at the Passover Seder in my head. He would remind us that this is our annual opportunity to leave the petty slaveries we create or allow behind us and to be and live our best—a good lesson, whatever your tradition. On Passover we tell the story of the 4 generations of children– the wise, the wicked, the simple and the ignorant–and how to pass along our heritage to each of them. We can usually find a piece of our self in each story.

Father

In Big Words I’m exploring some simple words we all know that seem to get bigger and bigger as my understanding and perspective shifts. This reminiscence is about my Father–fortunately a big character in my life. He was difficult to understand.
